Green Plate Special has been selected as Bonneville Seattle’s charity of the month for December 2020. The non-profit teaches students in 4th through 8th grades how food goes from the garden to the table, aiming to inspire and empower youth through growing, cooking and sharing food.
At their quarter-acre sized garden in Seattle, students learn hands on how to plant, harvest and cook their own food. In a typical year, Green Plate Special offers in school and after school programs, field trips, spring and summer camps and cooking classes.
While the pandemic has led to a few changes in operation, Green Plate Special has adapted and has been able to actually expand their reach to the community at large, not only their program participants. In the last 10 months, they have grown enough food to help support over 1,040 individuals with their grocery distribution services.
Additionally, they now provide online cooking classes and expanded educational program options for participants.
